The Spring Equinox is a celebration of balance and renewal, an invitation to shed the dormancy of winter and welcome the vibrant energy of spring. This season prompts us to refresh our intentions, clear our spaces, set the stage for a period of growth and abundance. It's a time to renew our commitment to natural wellness and embracing the gifts of mother nature to enhance our health and well-being.

#1: Herbal Teas for the Spring Equinox

Herbal Infusions for Rejuvenation

Spring beckons with the promise of new growth and the blooming of herbs that cleanse, heal, and invigorate. Embrace the tradition of herbal infusions, blending the likes of Dandelion, Nettle, and Lemon Balm, to create teas that detoxify the body and spirit. These natural concoctions serve as daily reminders of nature’s cycles and our connection to the earth.

Dandelion Tea

This is my personal favorite dandelion tea. I add a lil honey & coconut milk, Mmmm. I love drinking this at bedtime, it's caffeine-free & tastes amazing. Lemon Balm and Nettle Sun Tea Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup fresh lemon balm leaves (or 2 tablespoons dried lemon balm leaves)

  • 1/4 cup fresh nettle leaves (use gloves to handle if they're fresh, to avoid stinging)

  • 8-10 cups of water

  • Optional: Honey or your favorite sweetener to taste

  • Optional additions for flavor variations: Mint leaves, lemon slices, chamomile flowers

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Herbs: Rinse the lemon balm and nettle leaves gently under cool water. For fresh nettle, make sure to wear gloves to avoid getting stung.

  2. Jar Preparation: Place both the lemon balm and nettle leaves in a large glass jar. If you’re adding optional ingredients like mint, lemon slices, or chamomile, add them now.

  3. Add Water: Pour 8-10 cups of cold or room temperature distilled water into the jar. Ensure all the leaves are submerged.

  4. Sun Brew: Seal the jar and place it in a sunny spot for 6 to 10 hours, depending on the strength of the tea you prefer. The sun's warmth will infuse the water with the flavors and beneficial properties of the herbs.

  5. Strain and Serve: Strain the tea to remove all plant material, then serve the tea as you like - chilled or at room temperature. Sweeten if desired.

  6. Enjoy Iced: Your Lemon Balm and Nettle Sun Tea is ready! This blend combines the calming effects of lemon balm with the nutritional benefits of nettle, a perfect wellness-focused hydrating Spring Infused Iced Tea.

Elderberry Tincture Recipes

Non-Alcoholic Elderberry Tincture (Glycerite) Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup fresh elderberries (or 1/2 cup dried elderberries), stems removed and cleaned

  • 1 1/2 cups vegetable glycerin

  • 1/2 cup distilled water

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Elderberries: If using fresh elderberries, ensure they are fully ripe and remove all stems, as they can be toxic. Wash the berries thoroughly. Dried elderberries should be free from any debris or stems.

  2. Mix Ingredients: In a clean, dry jar, combine the elderberries, vegetable glycerin, and distilled water. The water helps to extract water-soluble properties from the berries, while the glycerin acts as a preservative and extraction medium.

  3. Seal and Store: Securely close the jar with a lid and shake it to mix the ingredients. Store the jar in a cool, dark place, shaking it once daily to help with the extraction process. Allow the mixture to infuse for 4 to 6 weeks.

  4. Strain: After the infusion period, strain the glycerite through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into another clean jar. Press the berries to extract as much liquid as possible.

  5. Bottle: Transfer the strained liquid into dark glass bottles, preferably with droppers for easy dosing. Label the bottles with the contents and date.

  6. Usage: The recommended dosage for an elderberry glycerite is similar to that of an alcohol-based tincture. For adults, 1/2 to 1 teaspoon up to three times a day during the cold and flu season or when feeling under the weather is typical. Please consult with a healthcare provider for appropriate dosages for children.

Classic Elderberry Tincture Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup fresh elderberries (or 1/2 cup dried elderberries)

  • 2 cups vodka or brandy (at least 80 proof to ensure preservation)

  • Optional: A tablespoon of raw honey or glycerin for sweetness (adjust to taste)

  • Smoothlife Tinctures coming soon SmoothlifeWellness.com **See above for non-alcoholic recipe**

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Berries: If using fresh elderberries, carefully remove the berries from the stems (the stems are toxic and should not be used). Wash the berries thoroughly. If using dried elderberries, ensure they are free from any debris.

  2. Combine Ingredients: Place the elderberries in a clean, dry glass jar. Pour the alcohol over the berries, ensuring they are completely submerged. If you're adding honey or glycerin for sweetness, mix it in now.

  3. Seal and Store: Close the jar tightly with a lid and shake it gently to mix the contents. Store the jar in a cool, dark place. Shake the jar lightly every day for at least 4 to 6 weeks. This process allows the alcohol to extract the beneficial compounds from the elderberries.

  4. Strain: After the infusion period, strain the tincture through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth into another clean, dry jar. Press or squeeze the berries to extract as much liquid as possible.

  5. Bottle: Transfer the strained tincture to dark glass dropper bottles for easy use and storage. Label the bottles with the date and contents.

  6. Use: The recommended dosage for adults is typically 1/2 to 1 teaspoon up to three times a day during cold and flu season or when you feel an illness coming on. Children's doses are usually half of the adult dosage, but please consult with a healthcare provider before giving any herbal remedy to children.

Drop Downs: Important Information

Benefits of Elderberry Tincture:

  1. Immune Support: Elderberries are rich in vitamins (especially vitamin C) and antioxidants that can help boost the immune system.

  2. Cold and Flu Relief: Elderberry can reduce the duration and severity of cold and flu symptoms.

  3. Anti-inflammatory and Antioxidant Effects: Elderberries have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which may help reduce inflammation and protect against chronic disease.

Precautions:

  • Always use ripe, cooked, or dried elderberries, as raw and unripe berries can be toxic.

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women and individuals with autoimmune diseases should avoid elderberries unless advised otherwise by a healthcare professional.

  • Elderberry can interact with certain medications, so it's wise to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new herbal remedy.

#3: Manifesting Growth: Affirmations and Journaling

The Transformative Power of Affirmations

The Spring Equinox is not only a physical transition from winter to spring but also a symbolic gateway to new beginnings and personal growth. As the natural world around us bursts into life, we too can harness this powerful energy to manifest our own renewal and transformation. The practices of affirmations and journaling are particularly potent during this time, serving as tools to align our intentions with the universe's expansive growth.

Incorporating affirmations into our daily lives, especially during a time of renewal like the Spring Equinox, harnesses the power of positive thinking and intention-setting. These affirmations, when repeated with conviction and belief, can significantly influence our mindset, guiding us towards a life filled with abundance, growth, and well-being.

To enhance your journey of personal growth this spring, Smooth Life Wellness invites you to embrace the following affirmations:

"I am open and receptive to the new beginnings this spring brings into my life."

This affirmation welcomes the fresh energy of the season, encouraging openness to change and new opportunities.

"With every breath I take, I plant the seeds of positivity and growth within me."

Use this affirmation to remind yourself that your thoughts and intentions are powerful, capable of nurturing personal development just as the earth nurtures seeds in spring.

"I release the old to make room for new growth and possibilities."

The Clarity of Journaling

Journaling, on the other hand, is a reflective practice that allows you to clarify your thoughts and feelings, document your days, and track your personal growth over time. Writing down your goals, aspirations, and the steps you plan to take to achieve them can significantly clarify your path forward. The act of putting pen to paper is a powerful way to manifest your intentions and make your dreams more tangible.

This spring, dedicate a journal to tracking your progress through the SmoothLife Affirmation Challenge. Reflect on the affirmations that strike a chord with you, and write about the changes you observe in your thoughts, emotions, and external circumstances.
