Updated: Apr 24, 2023

Meditation is a powerful practice that can help reduce stress, increase focus & frequency, and improve overall well being. It is a great first step in your wellness journey. Starting a meditation practice is safe and easy, it's a great form of self care and is definitely worth the natural weellness rewards.

To help you get started, here are 10 tips to help with Beginning your Meditation Practice

Tip #1 - Start Small

When starting a meditation practice, it's best to begin with just a few minutes a day. Gradually increase the time as you become more comfortable with your practice. I usually recommend 10 minutes to start but 5 minutes is ok too. Whatever you are comfortable with.❤️

Tip #2 - Find a quiet space

Choose a quiet space where you won't be disturbed. This could be a room in your home or a quiet spot in nature.

Tip #3 - Get Comfortable

Sit or lay down in a comfortable position, a chair, the bed or on the floor on your yoga mat. Feel free to make the space your own by adding candles or crystals. The most important part is to be in a space where you are comfortable and free from noises or distractions.

Tip #4 - Focus on your breath

Close your eyes if you are comfortable, or you can focus on a stationary object. Now breath, in your nose & out your mouth. Pay attention to the sensation of the air moving in and out of your body. If your mind tends to wander always come back to your breathing.

Tip #5 - Let thoughts come & go

As you meditate, thoughts will inevitably arise. Instead of getting caught up in them, simply acknowledge them and let them go. Remember to come back to your breathing.

Tip #6 - Try guided meditations

Try a guided meditation, they can be very helpful. There are many apps and websites that offer guided meditations for free. I love guided meditations & use them regularly. They are a great way to build your practice to include different styles & techniques of meditation.

Tip #7 - Be patiant & loving with yourself

Like any new skill, meditation takes time to master. Be patient & loving with yourself, meditation is a practice! The more you do it the better you get. Try different places, different positions, & different lengths of time, you will find what makes you comfortable. Feel free to explore that's the beauty of meditation and natural wellness.

Tip #8 - Practice Gratitude

As you meditate, take a few moments to focus on gratitude. It can be at the beginning or as you end your practice. Just set aside a few moments to reflect on the things in your life that you're grateful for. Gratitude is an amazing pillar of mindfulness that enriches our lives and allows us to open up to the many joys in life, both big and small. Although, practicing gratitude isn't always easy. Making time to practice gratitude can reset your entire mood & mind set for the day.

Tip #9 - Be consistent

To experience the benefits of meditation, it's important to be consistent with your practice. Set aside a specific time each day for meditation. I go through phases within my practice, and that is ok. The key to this tip is to practice daily. Explore, try different places, & different times, but to grow and flourish. Be consistent.

Tip #10 - Don't judge yourself

Meditation is a judgment-free practice. Don't judge yourself if you find your mind wandering or if you have trouble staying focused. Simply acknowledge it and return to your breathing. Meditation is a practice in which you will gradually grow, so love yourself & be patient and understanding.

By following these tips, you can begin to establish a regular meditation practice that will help you feel more calm and centered in your daily life. Remember, the key is to be consistent, patient, and to approach the practice with an open mind and a loving, compassionate heart. As your practice begins to grow and flourish, you will come to see how meditation is a major part of the Smoothlife Lifestyle!
